The military’s vehicles get a lot of attention. But one is particularly iconic: the Humvee.
The Army has 15 different variations of the HMMWV, which can be used as a troop transport vehicle, cargo carrier, weapons platform or ambulance. The Humvee, or HMMWV as it’s officially known, is one of the most well-known and iconic vehicles in the military. It’s a four-wheel drive vehicle that was first used in the Gulf War and helped inspire the civilian Hummer automotive marque. Today, the Humvee remains a staple in militaries around the world and even has some civilian adaptations.
The original HMMWV was designed as a jack-of-all-trades vehicle that could take the place of old jeeps and other light military utility vehicles like the Vietnam-era M151 1/4 short-ton (230 kg) MUTT, M561 Gama Goat, M718A1 and M792 ambulance versions, and the CUCV. Its size and stiff construction allowed it to carry a wide range of weapons that other lighter vehicles simply weren’t equipped to do.
It was also designed with an open back that would allow soldiers to easily embark and disembark without having to bother with doors or hatches. This made it much faster to get on and off the vehicle than a jeep and helped speed up operations. The open back also gave the vehicle an extra advantage in desert conditions where it was often deployed; it could travel through sandstorms and other abrasive conditions without any problems at all.
While the original HMMWV had some issues, it was still very useful as a military tactical vehicle. It had a good battle record in desert combat and was very versatile as an AFV. However, it wasn’t suited for urban combat and was vulnerable to small arms fire and IEDs. The later “up armored” versions addressed this issue and were better suited to urban warfare environments.
As time went on, the Humvee’s versatility and capabilities increased, leading to new developments like armoured turrets, surveillance systems, communications gear, fire suppression equipment, gunnery stations, and more. The added weight of all these add-ons meant that a fully loaded Humvee quickly became overloaded and less efficient than its predecessors. By the end of the Iraq War, a fully armored Humvee could easily tip the scales at more than double its original design weight; this means that the same 113 horsepower didn’t go as far as it once did.
The Humvee’s Off-Road Capabilities
In its most basic form, a Humvee is a big truck that can go pretty much anywhere. But the guys at Mountain Machine took that one step further by putting a lot of power to the wheels, making this military vehicle a legitimate off-road performer.
The result is a machine that can do things you wouldn’t expect from a vehicle that starts with the phrase “High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle.”
They’ve got a lot of ground clearance, a ton of tires, and macho styling that appeals to off-road fans everywhere. Plus, they’ve got a unique drivetrain that sets them apart from the rest of the crowd. And Steve and his crew take full advantage of all these traits.
For starters, they installed a massive six-inch lift kit. This gives the Humvee plenty of room under the hood for bigger engine upgrades and other mechanical mods. They also used a billet-backed converter and an NP261 transfer case to make sure all that power gets down to the road.
Once that’s done, they set about tackling some tough terrain. Throughout the clip you can see the Humvee struggling to feed in all that horsepower in a smooth manner. That’s because the HMMWV isn’t really designed to climb steep hills. Instead, it’s designed to get 2-10 US military men into battle at a high rate of speed over rough terrain. That means that it doesn’t have a lot of flex, tends to get high centered easily, and is heavy as hell.
The good news is that this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The HMMWV was made to be as maintainable, reliable and survivable as possible for the troops who use it. It also has a fully waterproof engine that can drive underwater when needed. It’s an excellent way to get around when the roads are closed.
